SuperSport Suffer Defeat In Confed Cup Opener

SuperSport Suffer Defeat In Confed Cup Opener

SuperSport United began their CAF Confederation Cup group stage journey with a 1-0 defeat away to Future FC on Sunday afternoon.

Matsatsantsa coach Gavin Hunt gave starts to Shandre Campbell, Keenan Bezuidenhout, Risen Albert and Jesse Donn, as Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro started in the attack.

SuperSport came into the clash in some shaky away form in the Confederation Cup, having failed to win their last four encounters, with their last win coming against Club Africain in 2017.

The Pretoria outfit did look lively in the early stages of the clash, but they had to wait until the midway point for Ighodaro to force Future goalkeeper Mahmoud Gennesh into a fine save.

Despite the flurry of changes, Hunt's troops remained in the contest managed to carve out another chance ten minutes before the break but Bezuidenhout was unable to capitilise.

It was more of the same from the South African side as the second half got underway, with Campbell the next player to force Gennesh into another good save as frustration began to grow.

Hunt responded with a double change for the final 30 minutes, as Bezuidenhout and Selaelo Rasebotja made way for Phathutshedzo Nange and Jabu Matsio.

However, the Egyptian side got the breakthrough with 14 minutes left on the clock as Ghanam Mohamed managed to fire past SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.

Matsatsantsa were unable to find a way back into the contest even after throwing on Bradley Grobler, as the Egyptian Premier League side held on for the opening win.
