Downs Loanee Sends SuperSport Confed Cup Group Stage

SuperSport United will be aiming to advance in the CAF Confederation Cup when they host Gaborone United in the second leg of the second preliminary round.

CAF Confederation Cup

Result: SuperSport United 3 (4)- (1) 0 Gaborone United

Date: 29 September 2023

Venue: New Peter Mokaba Stadium

Coach Gavin Hunt made wholesale the changes after the midweek loss to Chippa United, with goalkeeper Washington Arubi, Jesse Donn, Etiosa Ighodaro, Shandre Campbell and Keenan Bezuindenhout among the inclusions.

Bezuidenhout was given another chance to impress Hunt after who came off the bench in the first leg and got the away for the Pretoria outfit shortly after the halftime break.

The Botswana side were well rested for the second-leg encounter as they have not played a competitive fixture since the first leg on home soil two weeks ago.

The first half was evenly matched affair and the young Cambell went close to pulling the home side after 20 minutes, but his curling effort sailed wide of goalkeeper Ookeditse Semelamela's goal.

While that proved to be the only clear-cut opening in the first half, Hunt's charges got their reward just before the hour mark when Ighodaro opened his account for the tournament after being set up by Ronald Pfumbidzai.

The Nigerian striker would go on to get his and SuperSport's second goal on the night with just under 20 minutes to go, making it 3-1 on aggregate and sealing the side's spot in the group stage.

Bradley Grobler put the cherry on the cake for the home side on 90 minutes by getting the third goal on the night and his first in the competition this campaign.

Here's how they lined up:

SuperSport United: Arubi, Hamza, Okon, Pfumbidzai, Bhasera, Donn, Margeman, Lungu, Campbell, Bezuidenhout, Ighodaro

Subs: Goss, Xulu, Dopolo, Matsio, Nange, Rasebotja, Lakay, Grobler, Dzvukamanja
