Result: Sekhukhune United 3-1 FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo

Date: 16 September 2023

Venue: New Peter Mokaba Stadium

Sekhukhune Coach Brandon Truter gave starts to  goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, Sibusiso Vilakazi, Miguel Diaz and Tresor Tshibwabwa as the side was freshened up ahead of the busy schedule.

The Limpopo side were competing in a continental competition for the first time in their history after reaching the Nedbank Cup final last season.

Sekhukhune got off to the perfect start when Nigerian striker Chibuike Ohizu opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the campaign after ten minutes.

The home side's lead did not last long though, as the Congolese outfit drew level in the 14th minute courtesy of a strike from Mokonzi Katumbwe.

Truter's charges remained in charges after conceding the equaliser, but had to wait until the 40th minute to secure the second goal when Jamie Webber found the back of the net with a free-kick.

After ending the half in control, Truter's charges managed to bag a third goal ten minutes into the second stazna thanks to Tshibwabwa's first goal of the campaign.

With one eye on the midweek DStv Premiership action, Truter opted to make a couple changes thereafter as scorers Webber and Ohizu made way for Elias Mokwana and Vusimuzi Mncube for the final 30 minutes.

The home side were able to see out the closing stages and will take a healthy lead into the second leg in two weeks, although they will be back in league action against Royal AM on Wednesday.

Here's how they line up:

Sekhukhune United: Learner, Mkhabela, Mabotja, Tshibwabwa, Gyimah, Diaz, Webber, Mkhize, Ohizu, Vilakazi, Mosadi

Subs: Sangare, Ntiya-Ntiya, Cardoso, Mokotjo, Maloisane, Bwalya, Ncube, Mokwana, Thulwa
