Atletico Madrid secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 on penalties.
The first real effort at goal arrived in the 10th minute, as Karim Bellarabi found space on the edge of the area, before having a go, but his effort sailed just wide of the upright.
There was an early blow for Diego Simeone's side in the 23rd minute, as goalkeeper Moya had to be substituted by injury and was replaced by Jan Oblak.
Three minutes later and Atletico were in front, as Koke teed up Mario Suarez on the edge of the area and the midfielder scored with the help of a deflection.
The second half got off to a slow start, with the first chance arriving in the 70th minute, as Arda Turan failed to turn home Antoine Griezmann's cross.
Atletico continued to push for the second goal and were nearly rewarded in the 81st minute but Bernd Leno was on hand to keep out Turan's low effort.
Neither side could find the all important goal in the closing stages and were forced to play another extra 30 minutes.
Leno came to Leverkusen's rescue in the second half of extra time, as the shot-stopper did well to keep out Garcia's stinging effort from 12-yards out.
The score remained the same at after extra-time and the game had to be decided via the penalty shoot-out, where Atletico held their nerve to triumph 3-2, with Fernando Torres scoring what turned out to be the winning spot-kick.
