UEFA Europa League Result: AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Manchester United Date: 03 October 2019 Venue: ADO Den Haag Manchester United's struggles away from home continued after dropping points in their second UEFA Europa League encounter against AZ Alkmaar.
David De Gea made a surprise appearance in goal for United ahead of Sergio Romero, but Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire dropped to the bench with Brandon Williams and Marcos Rojo handed starts. Alkmaar started strongly and had the ball in the net in the opening minutes with a header from Myron Boadu following a corner, but the effort was ruled for offside. Oussama Idrissi created a decent threat from outside the area on 15 minutes as United dropped back, but De Gea went down and saved for a corner. United got into gear 15 minutes later with Daniel James pulling a cut back to Mason Greenwood, who saw his effort scooped off the line by former Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar. The second half put the Dutch side on their continued dominance from the first spell, with no changes during the halftime exchanges. Alkmaar added further pressure on United's rear-guard, who scrambled to clear their lines with Idrissi and co causing all sorts of confusions. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer instigated the substitution of Rashford 63 minutes on the bounce, with James the sacrificed party. Owen Wijndal put De Gea to the test 20 minutes to the end with a sweeping effort from 30-yards outside the area, but the Spaniard answered the call. Alkmaar ended the match stronger than the more illustrious English outfit, but had to settle for a point apiece nonetheless as United have now failed to win their last 10 away games in all competitions, a record which stretches back to last season.
