7 Players Whose Transfers Broke Down

Most will still remember David de Gea's failed transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid – here are seven stars, including two Africans, whose moves collapsed at the last minute in the latest window.

Asamoah Gyan's loan switch from Shanghai SIPG to Reading collapsed on Monday.

It was first reported that the Ghana captain did not pass his medical, but later reports suggested he refused to accept a clause that would stop him from going to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The 30-year-old did, however, complete a switch to United Arab Emirates side Al Ahli on Wednesday, though.

Everton were reportedly very close to signing Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle United. The Toffees had met his £30 million release clause, and even had a private jet waiting to take him to Goodison Park. However, even personal phone calls from manager Ronald Koeman, which Sissoko didn't answer, could not stop the player from completing a last-minute move to Tottenham Hotspur instead.

Axel Witsel, meanwhile, was said to be close to joining Serie A champions Juventus, and had already undergone his medical at the club. Juve and Zenit St Petersburg had reportedly agreed on an €18 million (R296 million) transfer fee, but the Russian side failed to secure a replacement for the Belgium international and cancelled the transfer as a result.

Other failed transfers include Sunderland's attempts to sign Yann M'Vila (Rubin Kazan) and goalkeeper Mika (Boavista), Everton's chase for Yacine Brahimi (Porto) and Manolo Gabbiadini (Napoli), as well as Swansea's effort to sign Enner Valencia (West Ham).
