Premier League Report: Burnley v Manchester United 08 February 2022

Manchester United dropped out of the top four on Tuesday evening after drawing 1-1 with struggling Burnley on Tuesday night.

Result: Burnley 1-1 Manchester United

Date: 08 February 2022

Venue: Turf Moor

Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench as Edinson Cavani returned to the line-up while Luke Shaw replaced Alex Telles who tested positive for Covid-19.

The Red Devils thought they had got off to the perfect start on 13 minutes when Raphael Varane sent a well-placed header into the far corner, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for Harry Maguire's offside in the build-up.

Ralf Rangnick's charges got their reward five minutes later when Marcus Rashford played in Shaw who picked Paul Pogba to slam home from close range.

It was one-way traffic for most of the half and the visitors almost had a second goal in the 33rd minute when Shaw's cross found Cavani, who saw his header brilliantly saved by Nick Pope.

Burnley, meanwhile, struggled to register a single effort at goal in the first half, but that changed a minute into the second as he collected a pass from Wout Weghorst before calmly dinking the ball over David de Gea.

With United struggling to get back in front, Rangnick opted to introduce Ronaldo in the 67th minute in place of Cavani while Aaron Lennon replaced Maxwell Cornet for the hosts.

Ronaldo almost made the perfect impact 10 minutes later after meeting an in-swinging corner, but he failed to direct his header on target from close range.

The Red Devils were unable to restore their lead in the latter stages of the half and had to settle for a point, which sees them drop to fifth after West Ham United defeated Watford.
