Former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur youth player Kiernan Hughes-Mason will spend more than a decade in prison after leaving a two-year-old girl with brain damage in 2020.
The 32-year-old, who previously played in the EFL Championship and appeared in the FA Cup, was said to have caused several injuries to the girl in a heinous attack.
While he claimed the girl fell from her dollhouse, medical experts said she suffered injuries not unlike a "high-speed road traffic accident" or a "fall from a substantial height of several storeys".
The young victim is believed to not be able to walk or stand by herself, and struggles to speak. She also needs to be fed through a tube as she finds it difficult to eat or drink.
In an emotional statement, the girl's mother expressed her gratitude at justice having been served.
"Despite all this, we still see her personality shine through every day. In the midst of the pain she constantly faces, she brightens the darkest days," she said, according to the Mirror.
"We will continue our best to ensure that she can live each day to the fullest as best she can. We love her more than anything else in this world. We are thankful that today some form of justice has been achieved, however this sentence does not compare to the life sentence our little girl now has.
