English Premier League
Result: Watford 2-2 Arsenal
Date: 15 September 2019
Venue: Vicarage Road
Arsenal threw away a two-goal as they drew 2-2 with Watford in the Premier League on Sunday evening at Vicarage Road.
Mesut Ozil earned his first start of the season alongside Dani Ceballos and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang in the attacking third for the Gunners. Tom Cleverley launched the first big chance with a powerful shot from range on ten minutes after the defence back-peddled, but Bernd Leno palmed for a corner. Arsenal continued living dangerously thereafter, as Gerard Deulofeu played in Jose Holebas who failed to take aim with a poor effort from a gaping scenario. Watford were made to pay for their missed chances inside 21 minutes when Aubameyang turned in the area to fire in the bottom corner from Sead Kolasinac's pass. Aubameyang doubled his and his side's tally on 32 minutes as he got on the end of Ainsley Maitland-Niles cross to tap into an empty net. The Hornets showed renewed energy following the restart, but the Gunners guided their defensive lines effectively to keep their counterparts at bay. From absolute nothing, Cleverley hit home a first time shot on 52 minutes following Sokratis Papastathopoulos's miscalculated pass inside the area to halve the deficit. Suddenly belief returned to the hosts, who had the London outfit on the back-foot and under increasing pressure near the final quarter. Meanwhile, the Gunners refreshed their stall following the last 20 minutes, with Ozil making way for Reiss Nelson in the middle of the park. That proved immaterial as Watford levelled from the spot through Roberto Pereyra, who sent Leno the wrong way from the penalty spot on 81 minutes after being brought down by David Luiz. Both sides went for the kill in the final few minutes, however neither seized the moment sharing the spoils instead.
