According to Egypt-based publication KingFut, the South Africa international returned to club training on Monday ahead of the resumption of the CAF Champions League.
Al Ahly will take on Ghanaian side Medeama SC in the competition on Friday, with the Red Devils currently leading Group D after four matches.
Marcel Koller's team have won only one of their four Champions League matches so far in this campaign, drawing the other three.
Tau was one of the standout performers in the tournament last season as Al Ahly beat Wydad Casablanca in a two-legged final to lift the trophy.
The 29-year-old contributed to 10 goals in 12 matches on the way to helping his club to a record-extending 11th CAFCL triumph.
