AFCON-Winning Coach Reveals He Has Applied For Top African Job

A coach who has won the Africa Cup of Nations in the past has revealed he has applied for one of the continent's top jobs.

Speaking in a recent interview with GHANAsoccernet, 74-year-old German tactician Winfried Schafer said he has put his name forward for the vacant Ghana head coach role.

This comes after the Ghana Football Association parted ways with Chris Hughton following a disappointing AFCON campaign in the Ivory Coast, and Schafer is hoping his experience can help the nation get back to where they once were.

The German, who won the 2002 AFCON as Cameroon manager, has insisted he would focus on strengthening the team with players based in Ghana, which is reportedly a vision many share in the country.

"I have applied for the job hoping to get it," Schafer stated.

"I am ready to work with some former players who are doing well in their coaching career. I believe I can impact some knowledge in them as well to ensure we achieve success with the Black Stars with a long-term project.

"I know the Ghana league has abundant top talents. A senior team coach needs to be in the country to monitor players and give call-ups to those performing well.

"I would spend much of my time in the country to help get qualified players in the league to be part of the Black Stars."
