How Johnson Could Improve The Soweto Derby

There has been suggestions that the Soweto derby fever has been dampened somewhat by Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates' lowly positions on the log but there's one big factor that can make it memorable.

The last two league clashes between the two Soweto giants were tight affairs, not only with the scorelines, as Amakhosi won both games 1-0, but also in terms of approach.

The Glamour Boys under former coach Molefi Ntseki approached the games conservatively, sitting deep and waiting to hit Pirates on counter-attacks, with the speed of Ashley Du Preez particularly a factor.

However, with Cavin Johnson in charge of Chiefs, there is an expected change of style, where he is insisting on playing the Amakhosi way, which is an attacking brand of football from the first whistle and that prospect against the Buccaneers could give the Soweto derby a lift in terms of excitement, as the game could be more open.

Johnson says Amakhosi supporters were not happy with the previous technical team and suggested that they are hoping to win them over with an attractive brand of football.

"Luck has been rolling for us in the last six games, maybe Chiefs can make the seventh one (Chiefs have won the past five league games against Pirates) but most importantly, (on Wednesday) we played in the stadium with no supporters but the players put a good shift," Johnson told journalists at the Soweto derby press conference.

"Yes, we conceded silly goals but come Saturday, it's our home game we have 40, 000 of those supporters all belonging to Kaizer Chiefs and they can be the 13th man on the field and push us.

"And really, I feel that 13th man because in the past there has been some disagreements between the 13th man and technical staff but we hope to have changed that, we hope to turn that around and put on the Kaizer Chiefs way and when that happens, then I think you'll see a better Kaizer Chiefs," he added.

Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro also expressed concerns that they don't know much about how Amakhosi like to approach games under Johnson and that element of surprise could open the game up to be a better spectacle.
