Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Joseph "Shakira" Kamwendo has shared his perspective with Soccer Laduma on the transformative potential of loan moves for footballers struggling to find their form. In an exclusive interview, the Malawian-based coach reflected on Tshegofatso Mabasa's loan spells at Sekhukhune United and Moroka Swallows as pivotal moments that helped the striker regain his confidence and performance levels.

Kamwendo, drawing from his own experiences and observations, emphasized the motivational boost that a loan can provide.

"To be honest with you loan moves really help a lot of players. I think Mabasa needed that loan. It motivates you to give more when you go back because you know how hard it is to get into the team. You remember (Monnapule) Saleng was also on loan at Moroka Swallows a season before his best season? That's why I am saying Mabasa needed this loan to reenergise him. He is like a new player altogether now. That's what once happened too when I was at Pirates. When I was not playing regularly they loaned me to Vasco Da Gama and when I came back from that loan deal I played more regularly in a star-studded side. So, when you are sent on loan it doesn't mean you are a bad player," Kamwendo told the Siya crew.

With the current season nearing its end, Kamwendo believes Mabasa has the potential to emerge as the top goalscorer, despite stiff competition.

"Yes, the competition is tough as there is that Mamelodi Sundowns striker (Lucas Ribeiro Costa) and also Khanyisa Mayo from Cape Town City who can also still go on to claim the top goalscorer award but I think if Mabasa continues to score like this he could win that award and you know that he deserves it. He has done very well both at Swallows and Pirates," Kamwendo concluded.

As Orlando Pirates prepare for their next match, against Royal AM on Sunday afternoon, 28 April, at the Harry Gwala Stadium, all eyes will be on Mabasa to see if he can continue his scoring run and possibly clinch the coveted award eventually.
