Downs & Stellenbosch Learn PSL DC Fate

accreditation

The verdict on Mamelodi Sundowns’ surprise charge by the Premier Soccer League on Monday night has been revealed.

Following the shock decision by the league to file a complaint that Sundowns and Stellenbosch brought the PSL, SAFA, CAF and FIFA into disrepute by paying tribute to the late Anele Ngcongca when the two sides met last year, a hearing took place as both teams prepared to face the music for honouring a player of that stature.

During their DStv Premiership encounter at Loftus Stadium in November, a few days after Ngcongca, who played for Genk in Belgium and Bafana Bafana at the 2010 World Cup, both clubs stopped play to clap in the 16th minute.

The defender wore jersey No. 16 at Sundowns.

But the PSL were incensed that Downs did not ask for permission and as a result they were handed a charge sheet by prosecutor, Nande Becker.

Sanity prevailed, however, as the Siya crew has been informed that the Brazilians and Stellenbosch were not found guilty in their actions.

Downs honoured the late Motjeka Madisha in similar fashion and had expected to be hauled before the PSL disciplinary committee yet again, but after last night’s verdict it is now perhaps unlikely to be the case.
