Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mabedi has painted a bleak picture of the club's current situation, highlighting a lack of quality and passion that threatens their top-eight hopes.

Speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma, the former defender and captain, now the Malawi national team coach, observed a stark difference when compared to the Chiefs he knew.

"You know Kaizer Chiefs is a big team. It needs players who can play for a team of Chiefs' calibre. From where I stand Chiefs' players lack quality and passion. They are not passionate enough to die on the field for the team. And again I don't see dedication, commitment and integrity. It's unlike Chiefs to lose the way the are losing now and it's all because they lack quality and passion. It's really bad for the team," Mabedi observed.

Mabedi, who captained Chiefs to the league title in the 2004/05 season, believes a return to their successful scouting methods is critical. He reminisced about the players who formed the core of that championship team.

"All they need to do next season is recruit the players who are Chiefs quality. We can not compete with other teams if we don't have quality. All I can urge is the powers that be, maybe to find a way of going back to the past and reintroduce the Kaizer Chiefs way of scouting and recruiting players and going back to winning ways and lifting trophies. We need that right now," Mabedi concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs face Richards Bay in an away DStv Premiership encounter on April 21th. Can they turn things around, or will Mabedi's concerns continue to ring true?
