South Africa were unable to come back from the 1-0 defeat they suffered in Abuja last week when they faced the Super Falcons in the return leg on Tuesday night at Loftus Versfeld.

The reigning Women's Africa Cup of Nations winners failed to find the back of the net in the nation's capital, meaning their wait to return to the prestigious sporting event is now extended to eight years.

The west Africans have had to wait double that time, but their 16-year wait to play at an Olympic Games has now ended courtesy of Randy Waldrum's first-ever triumph over Desiree Ellis.

Speaking after the encounter, the American expressed his pleasure at bringing joy to the Nigerian people.

"I think the team did everything we asked them to do to get the result," the Texas native told members of the media in his post-match press conference.

"We knew that South Africa really had to come at us. We respect their strength and we respect their team very much. We know what their qualities are, but I think this is our seventh or eighth clean sheet in our last eight or nine games, with Australia being the only team that’s scored twice on us, so we’ve been very good defensively.

"And with some proper work, we will even get better on the offensive side, which I know everybody has been asking for, but we need some time to prepare and get our players together.

"So just extremely excited. I know how much it means to the fans of Nigeria, to the NFF, to all the people of Nigeria to not have qualified for 16 years so to them I very thankful and happy, so I just appreciate the support."
