Africa is now reportedly likely to host the opening match of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

With Morocco among the three host nations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the north African nation are reportedly favourites to land the opening match of the global showpiece.

For the first time in 20 years, the globe's biggest sporting spectacle will return to African shores after Morocco, alongside Spain and Portugal, were announced as co-hosts of the 2030 competition.

The three nations have good relations outside of football, which has allowed for the trio to agree on submitting a joint bid, so there aren't many conflicts expected between them regarding the organisation of the next World Cup.

However, a point of contention that arose early on is which of the three would host the two main fixtures, namely the opening match and the final.

Portugal are believed to be out of the question because they do not have a stadium that exceeds a 65 000 capacity, and are said to have no plans to build any new arena, leaving Morocco and Spain.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists are understood to be pushing to host the final as they have plans to erect what would be the biggest stadium in the world, the Grand Stade de Casablanca.

According to Jeune Afrique, though, there are concerns within the country that they may not make it that far in the competition, and that hosting the opening match would likely be the best situation because it would mean the Atlas Lions would be supported by the home crowd.

In that instance, the newly renovated Santiago Bernabeu could be the arena that hosts the competition's deciding encounter.

While there is a discussion to be had between the two local organising committees, it is not expected to escalate, with the same report claiming a decision thereon will be concluded relatively quickly.
