For Apple Music's celebration of South Africa's 30 Years of Freedom, they collaborated with a number of celebrities, including; fashion designer Rich Mnisi, musicians Arno Carstens, Musa Keys, dancer Gregory Maqoma, and media personality Melanie Bala to create a soundtrack that celebrates the essence of South African music.

SA football legend Benni McCarthy created a soundtrack that speaks to his youth, featuring Mzansi icons such as the late Brenda Fassie, Mandoza, and other Kwaito trailblazers; Trompies and M'du.

Benni also honours the memory of his close friend, Kiernan "AKA" Forbes, by including his smash hits such as "Fela in Versace", "Congratulate" and "All Eyes On Me".

"My childhood memories, growing up in the Cape Flats, make these songs special to me," he tells Apple Music.

"These were the songs that gave you hope and aspirations of one day making a difference in people's lives. It was all about making a success of your life and dreaming about becoming famous just like them," says Benni, who also gave a nod to 2000s house music hits from DJ Sbu, Kaylow, and Mi Casa.

"After the big change, [our] new government and new president came with opportunities of a better South Africa," he explains.

"This was the era in which I made my dreams become a reality, and my life, together with my family, changed for the better. I became an international football player and a very, famous one. I was also very privileged to make music with a popular kwaito band called TKZee; we had a hit single called 'Shibobo'," shares Benni, who included five TKZee bangers to his playlist.

"Many songs [from newer generations of artists] were based on building the success of SA around the globe, and I was fortunate to have a few made in my honour.

"It was all about rising from poverty, and [from having] no future and opportunities, to making a good life for yourself and your family. Inspiration comes from following your dreams and never letting where you come from stop you from becoming a success story," he adds.

Benni also shows love to SA's international pop queen and Grammy award winner, Tyla, with his inclusion on "Water" at the end of his playlist.

"Umlilo" by Big Nuz is also in the mix, a song that South African football fans are more than familiar with, as it was part of the soundtrack of the ABSA Premiership era.
