Hunt: How PSL Can Be Competitive Again

After Mamelodi Sundowns dominated the domestic league by winning the Premiership for the past seven years, SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has suggested that a financial fair play could make the league competitive again. 

After the Brazilians won the League title for seven seasons running, the responsibility has been placed on their rivals, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, to rescue the competitiveness of the league by raising their standards.

The Tshwane giants arguably have had a landslide victory when it comes to the league race due to their financial power, where they are able to buy any best player in other PSL clubs, season in, season out.

In addition, Masandawana have been able to buy players from South America, who were on the radar of top European clubs and have also started to tap into the European market, bringing in players such as Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Arthur Sales, just to mention two players, who would cost nearly R100 million in transfer fees.

Hunt, who has seen SuperSport lose some of their best players over the years to Sundowns, believes a Financial Fair Play rule, utilized in the English Premier League, to make the league more competitive, would serve the PSL well, if it was to be adopted.

"Absolutely and I think we'll have a better league. Listen, it will never happen but if it did, I think we would have a much better league, it will be a hell of an exciting league and I think you would have a better national team as well," Hunt said on Soccerbeat YouTube Channel.

"There will be a lot of players that will play more football. I watched Bafana play last week, [Bathusi] Aubaas [for example], he hardly played any football, he goes to the national team, he plays two games and he was really good.

"But obviously at Sundowns you've got so much competition, it's difficult for the boy to get into the team but a guy like that playing on a regular basis for another club would be fantastic," Hunt suggested. 

The Financial Fair Play rule is based on a principle that clubs cannot spend more money than they generate, based on their revenue in their financial statements.
