Sundowns Loanee Sends SuperSport To NBK Cup Last 8

SuperSport United booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup after a last-gasp 2-1 win in extra-time over Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday evening.

Result: SuperSport United 2-1 Cape Town Spurs

Date: 12 February 2025

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

SuperSport made only one change, enforced, as Ayer Boya took the place of the suspended Siphesihle Ndlovu, with former Kaizer Chiefs strikers Samir Nurkovic and Christian Saile in attack alongside Gamphani Lungu and Lebohang Maboe.

Spurs had a dream start after Therlo Moosa gave them an early lead with a strike in the box following sustained pressure.

Matsatsantsa upped their game only after 15 minutes after Nyiko Mobbie forced a save out of goalkeeper Neil Boshoff.

SuperSport's pressure eventually paid off ten minutes before the interval after Ime Okon made it 1-1 with a strike in the box after he combined with Nurkovic from a set-piece situation.

The tempo of the game dropped towards the interval as the sides settled for a 1-1 scoreline going to the half-time break.

Gavin Hunt's charges started the second stanza brightly as Nurkovic almost made it 2-1 with a header that missed narrowly wide from a cross by Aphiwe Baliti.

With Spurs defending deep, Hunt decided to refresh his attack after the hour-mark, as Terrence Dzvukamanja replaced Lungu.

United continued to pressurize The Urban Warriors and had chances in the closing stages, as Mobbie was denied again by Boshoff and had another effort that missed narrowly wide.

The sides could not be separated in the end and extra-time was required to determine the winner.

Spurs were a little bit more adventurous in the early states of extra-time but they did not give shot-stopper Ricardo Goss much to do.

SuperSport gained momentum in the second period of extra-time and after putting pressure on Spurs, Maboe eventually snatched the winner in the last minute with a looping shot in the box and booked a quarter-final spot for Matsatsantsa.

Here's how they line up:

SuperSport United: Goss, Mobbie, Okon, Sanoka, Ayer, Baliti, Lungu, Maboe, Poggenpoel, Nurkovic, Saile
