Ex-Chiefs Youngster Nets On Debut In Stellies' 5-0 Win

Stellenbosch cruised to the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round after hammering Nsingizini Hotspurs 5-0 in the first preliminary round on Saturday afternoon

CAF Confederation Cup

Result: Stellenbosch FC 5-0 Nsingizini Hotspurs (8-0 on agg.)

Date: 24 August 2024

Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium

Stellies made two changes from their 3-0 win in the first-leg, as they handed youngsters Langelihle Phili and Liam de Kock their debuts.

Steve Barker's charges had a perfect start after Lehlohonolo Mojela gave them the lead and made it 4-0 on aggregate within the first ten minutes with a thumping shot that the Nsingizini goalkeeper could only help into the back of the net.

The hosts had the momentum, firing shots at goal and Phili eventually doubled their lead and made it 5-0 on aggregate just before the half-hour mark with a strike from range.

Stellies pinned the Eswatini outfit back in their own half and came close twice in quick succession shortly before the interval but Nsingizini goalkeeper made a double save to deny Phili and Mojela.

The Western Cape outfit continued where they left off from the break as six minutes into the second stanza Andre de Jong made it 3-0 and 6-0 on aggregate with a tap-in after a defensive error.

With the result already secured, around the hour-mark Barker rested Mojela and Sanele Barns and brought on youngsters Mervin Boji and Thulani Mini.

Nsingizini could not get out of their own half and with 20 minutes to go, Devin Titus almost added a fourth with a shot across the face of goal that could not find any teammate for an easy tap-in.

However, Stellies eventually ran riot five minutes before time after debutant Omega Mdaka made it 4-0 on the day with his first goal for the club.

In a one-way traffic, Boji also got on the scoresheet in the tail end for home side, as he made it 5-0 and 8-0 on aggregate.

The Cape Winelands side will face Congolese giants AS Vita Club in the next round, for a place in the group stages.

Here's how they line up:

Stellenbosch FC: Stephens, Moloisane, Jurgens, Basadien, De Kock, Palace, Nduli, De Jong, Phili, Barns, Mojela

Subs: Langeveldt, Mcaba, Mdaka, Smith, Adams, Titus, Mini, Boji
