Mohamed Salah Unable To Catch Lionel Messi In ESM Golden Shoe Race

Despite his record Premier League goal on the weekend, Mohamed Salah was unable to catch Lionel Messi in the European Golden Shoe race, and will not become the first African to lift the prestigious accolade this season as a result.

The Egyptian broke the record for the most goals in a 38-game Premier League campaign, jointly held by Alan Shearer, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo, on Sunday.

However, his solitary strike in Liverpool's 4-0 win over Brighton Hove Albion was not enough for him to upstage Messi in the race for the European Golden Shoe.

The Argentine remained at the top of the ranking on 34 strikes, equating to 68 points, and it now seems only a formality that he will to finish as Europe's top goalscorer for a record-breaking fifth time.

Harry Kane, meanwhile, made the biggest jump in the ranking, climbing to third spot following his brace in Tottenham Hotspur's 5-4 goal bonanza against Leicester City.

Robert Lewandowski and Ciro Immobile follow in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with 29 strikes each, and, while the Bayern Munich striker's season is over, Immobile is the only player who – in theory – could still beat Messi to the Golden Shoe.

Similar to LaLiga, there is one more gameweek in Serie A, but Immobile would need to score more than six goals to overtake Messi. Sixth-placed Mauro Icardi also has one more chance to add to his tally, but he would need to score seven goals in order to outscore the current leader.

Further down the ranking, Cristiano Ronaldo remained in ninth position as he is still recovering from his latest injury scare and is being rested by manager Zinedine Zidane.
