Ex-Ghana Captain: 2010 World Cup Exit Will Always Haunt Me

Ex-Ghana Captain: 2010 World Cup Exit Will Always Haunt Me

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah says the Black Stars elimination at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa still haunts him.

Ghana were a penalty kick away from becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup, but Asamoah Gyan failed to convert his spot-kick in regulation time which would have secured the win over Uruguay.

Ex-Ghana Star: My Expectation For Black Stars Is Very High

The Black Stars went on to lose to the South Americans on penalty and Appiah has not forgotten about that infamous night.

The nigh will also be remembered for Luis Suarez's deliberate handball on the goal-line, which led to Asamoah's penalty.

"I get goosebumps when I hear about the 2010 World Cup. it will haunt me for the rest of my life," Appiah told Al Jazeera.

Ghana will have a chance at redemption at this year's World Cup in Qatar, after being drawn against Uruguay, Portugal and South Africa.

"It's going to be difficult, 2006 when we went to the World Cup in Germany we were underdogs", Appiah tells Al Jazeera.

"We played against Italy we lost our first game and beat Czech Republic 2-0 who were number two in the world, played USA, number 5 in the world, we beat them. We are capable of doing that. We have to take it game after game".

"We play Portugal and not thinking about Uruguay. We concentrate on Portugal game and see what will happen. Our players are good".
