The shot-stopper is nearing the end of his contract with Ea Lla Koto, and the club has yet to enter into talks regarding a new contract with him.

Apart from featuring in the first game of the 2016/17 season, the 27-year-old has spent the opening stages of the campaign deputising for Thela Ngobeni at Stars.

"Johnny Mathole's contract with Free State Stars will be coming to an end at the end of the season. There are two clubs that are eyeing the player with a view to possibly signing him for next season. When Johnny was the first-choice goalkeeper for Stars last season, he performed well and was one of the best players in the team. Highlands Park and Cape Town City are some of the clubs that could be interested in signing him," a source told the Siya crew.

Mathole's agent, Mandla Mthembu, confirmed that they are yet to hear from Stars regarding the player's contract situation.

"Yes, we are aware that Johnny's contract will be coming to an end at the end of the season. I can confirm that we haven't yet started talking to Free State Stars, or any other club for that matter, about the player's contract situation. It will be premature for us to make any statements at this moment because we can only talk about such issues in January," said Mthembu.

Contacted for comment on the matter, Stars' general manager Rantsi Mokoena told the Siya crew that it is still too early for the club to start contract negotiations for next season's squad.

"With regards to Johnny, I think his agent is 100 percent correct in saying that it is still premature to discuss any contract renewals for next season when we are only in November and we have until January to do so," stated Mokoena.
