The World Cup on our shores is widely remembered for moments of brilliance and infamy, from Siphiwe Tshabalala's beautiful opening goal against Mexico to Diego Forlan's goalscoring exploits, Luis Suarez's handball and Andres Iniesta's dramatic winner in the final.
For South Africa, there was a collective sense of pride across the nation that is still felt today when reminiscing about the showpiece, and, for some players, it was a tournament at which they made their name.
There are, however, many footballers you may have forgotten were at the 2010 World Cup, such as Germany centre-back Jerome Boateng. The defender, who was just 21 years old at the time, had represented his country on just five occasions heading into the competition.
After being on the bench in his country's first two matches, against Australia and Serbia, Boateng started every other game, with Germany reaching the third place play-off, which they won 3-2 in a thrilling match against Uruguay.
Manchester City's record goalscorer Sergio Aguero is another who made the long trip to the African continent for the tournament at the tender age of just 22. Today, he is considered as one of the best strikers in world football, but back then he was only deemed good enough for one start in five games.

For Cameroon, a fresh-faced Joel Matip was selected to be part of the squad, despite the defender being just 18 years old. Sadly, the Liverpool man's relationship with African country's footballing body has soured over the years, with Matip last playing for the Indomitable Lions five years ago.
