With reigning European champions Liverpool being home to two of Africa's best players, the Reds reportedly came close to signing another star from the continent during the January transfer window.
Liverpool currently have a strong African contingent on their books, led by Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, while the club also boasts the likes of Naby Keita, Joel Matip and Yasser Larouci within their ranks.
According to France Football, Jurgen Klopp's side came close to adding another player from the continent to their squad when they made a €35 million (R571 million) bid for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze.
]It has been claimed further that the Reds' offer was rejected, with El Submarino Amarillo holding out for the full value of the Nigeria international's release clause, which is believed to stand at €65 million (R1.06 billion).
Chukwueze, who turns 21 years old in May, has scored 12 goals and recorded seven assists since making his debut for Villarreal's senior side in November 2018, and was nominated for the Kopa Trophy – awarded to the best-performing player under the age of 21 in a given year, as selected by former Ballon d'Or winners – last year.
Liverpool's Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City are also reported to have an interest in the Super Eagles star.
