The highest attendance figure recorded in an official match was the 1950 FIFA World Cup final between Brazil and Uruguay. FIFA stated that officially 173 850 spectators, who paid for the game, were in a packed Maracana stadium, while unofficial numbers even go as high as 199 854.

Uruguay upset the host nation as they lifted the trophy following a 2-1 win in what is considered the biggest attendance in a sporting event held in an enclosed stadium, according to topendsports.com.

The Maracana Stadium drew many more record crowds but for the purpose of this overview, each stadium can only appear once on the list.

The record attendance for a European football match was recorded in 1937 when 149 415 spectators went to Hampden Park to watch Scotland play against England, which ended 3-1 in favour of the hosts.

The highest attendance at a sporting event in England was registered in 1923 when 126 047 spectators came to watch the FA Cup fnal between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United, which the former won 2-0.

However, improved safety guidelines have since seen many stadiums receive a cap on attendance figures, with numbers rarely surpassing the 100 000 mark these days.
