Bidvest Wits Midfielder Rowan Human Taking PSL Football In His Stride

Young Rowan Human has been one of the shining lights in what has been a stuttering return to action for Bidvest Wits. He has managed to adapt to life in the PSL like a duck to water. Despite his rapid rise, the Westbury-born youngster is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

Through the years, Gavin Hunt has maintained his belief in youth, regardless of their age. It is that same policy that unearthed talent such as Benni McCarthy, who played under Hunt at the now-defunct Seven Stars.

It is also that same belief that has seen 19-year-old Human take the PSL by storm since the restart following the five-month COVID-19 enforced break.

Hunt showed his faith in the national under-20 captain when he brought him on for a 13 minute cameo against Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this season.

Since then, the man known as 'Mpho' has made six more appearances for the Clever Boys, including starts against Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows, AmaZulu and Maritzburg United.

Speaking to the Siya crew, Human opened up on his adaptation to life in the top flight and why he is not getting carried away by the hype surrounding him.

"I think mainly I adapted because, when I first came into the team, I could see what the coach Gavin wants from the players and the mentality that the players have at the first team. The players have a winning mentality and I've always wanted to win. And if I lose I don't feel happy with myself, even if we lose and I had a good game, I still feel like I had a bad game because we lost.

"That's what I've adapted from being with the first team. Is that they have a winning mentality and that mentality just pushes you to do better. So I think maybe that is a reason why I adapted so well, because the players want to win and they make it easy for you because it's your skill. Like you just have to show a bit of your skill, as long as the team wins and then the guys are happy. So I've realized that is the way. The coach gives you enough freedom to play. But he also expects you to be responsible," Human said.

Human's scintillating performances have not gone unnoticed, with both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns believed to be keen on his services, however it remains to be seen what his future holds.
