Click through the gallery above to see the 10 richest African footballers in history, according to various sources.

Salah reportedly earns $223 000 (R3.9 million) per week at Liverpool, and the Egyptian superstar features in fifth place on the list, according to a recent study by French publication Foot en Direct, as cited by nubiapage.com.

It is claimed that Salah has a net worth of $48 million (R837 million), and is on his way up the ranking, which includes active and retired players.

At the top of the list is Samuel Eto'o – arguably Africa's best-ever footballer to have played in Europe. The former FC Barcelona and Inter Milan striker is one of Africa's most decorated players of all time, and was the world's highest-paid footballer when he joined Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011.

His overall worth is estimated to stand out $140 million (R2.44 billion), according to the report, which would see him sit in ninth position among the 10 richest players in the world.

Didier Drogba follows in second place after lucrative stints at Shanghai Shenhua, Galatasaray and Montreal Impact towards the end of his career saw him receiving a few big pay cheques.

The retired Ivory Coast striker, who is still Chelsea's fourth-highest goalscorer in history and became the first African to score 100 Premier League goals, has accumulated a wealth of $98 million (R1.71 billion), the study claims.
