Following confirmation of his sensational return to Mamelodi Sundowns this week, the Siya crew can further reveal the contract terms Rulani Mokwena has put pen to paper on a for his role as an assistant coach at Chloorkop.
He has signed a four-year deal.
The 33-year-old tactician had initially been elevated to that position some six seasons ago to be the eyes and ears of head coach Pitso Mosimane and Manqoba Mnqgithi, who are his Downs seniors and had taken him under their tutelage.
But Mokwena then bid an emotional farewell and switched the blue and yellow of the Brazilians for the black and white at Orlando Pirates, becoming an assistant coach to Micho Sredojevic in 2017 to rebuild a club that had punched way below its weight.
In his time with the Buccaneers, the club twice finished runners up behind Sundowns in the Absa Premiership title race and had begun the current campaign rather tepidly – and then Sredojevic dropped a bombshell by resigning.
Mokwena was appointed interim head coach by Pirates and was in charge between August and November, overseeing a total of 14 matches – winning four, drawing and losing five – before his place was taken by Josef Zinnbauer.
Reportedly, he and the German mentor did not see eye to eye and Mokwena was subsequently "seconded" to Chippa United by Pirates for the remainder of his contract.
But the coach was only at Chippa for three months before he walked away on June 30 and his Downs return confirmed for the next four years.
