Premier League Report: Brighton v Liverpool 12 March 2022

Premier League Report: Brighton v Liverpool 12 March 2022

Mohamed Salah brought up his 20th Premier League goal of the season as Liverpool defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Result: Brighton Hove Albion 0-2 Liverpool

Date: 12 March 2022

Venue: AMEX Stadium

Jordan Henderson, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota were all recalled to the Reds line-up after the loss to Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League this week.

Brighton looked lively early on as Neil Maupay, who came in for Danny Welbeck, went close with an effort from distance inside the opening 10 minutes.

It was the Reds who broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when Joel Matip picked out Luis Diaz, who poked the ball beyond Robert Sanchez and was clattered in the process.

While the hosts struggled to carve out openings, the Reds nearly bagged a second goal three minutes before the break when Mohamed Salah skipped past Tariq Lamptey before forcing Sanchez into a save at his near post.

Brighton manager Graham Potter responded with a change in the second half, with Stephen Alzate replacing former Reds star Adam Lallana.

However, Lallana's afternoon lasted only eight minutes when he was forced off with an injury and replaced by Pascal Gross.

It went from bad to worse for the hosts on the hour mark when Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Yves Bissouma handled in the box, which allowed Salah to slot home his 20th league goal of the season.

Salah's goal seemingly knocked the wind out of Brighton's sail as the hosts struggled to carve out any openings, with Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker barely tested.

In the end, two goals were enough to send Liverpool three points behind league leaders Manchester City, who face Crystal Palace on Monday night.
