Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Dani Olmo confirmed that the Catalan giants had made a formal approach after impressing over the past year.
Olmo came Barcelona's famous La Masia academy before he left the club in 2016 for the Croatian top flight.
Valverde is aware of the 21-year-old's talent, but did not want to be drawn into any speculation at this time.
"He is a player that has been here before. He's a good footballer but he's with another team and I don't talk about speculation. We have to be cautious."
The Barcelona coach aslo discussed the departure of Carles Alena, who joined Real Betis on loan.
"It's true that Alena has left," Valverde said. "I didn't think it would happen so soon, but he had an option to leave because his contract said so. Now we have one player less in this position and we will see what happens.
"I'm not thinking about more departures, we'll count on what we have."
