The Africa Cup of Nations is officially under way, and there were some unexpected results in the opening games.
Zimbabwe played to an entertaining 2-2 draw with the No. 1 African ranked team, Algeria. The Warriors led 2-1 going into half time, but Algeria equalised towards the end of the second half to make the score 2-2, thanks to a certain Riyad Mahrez.
Supporters have voiced their opinions about the Warriors, here's what one of them said:
"Up against a galaxy of stars, including the reigning African Footballer of the Year and former French youth internationals, the Warriors of Zimbabwe were not fazed. In Willard Katsande, they have a leader who wears his heart on his sleeve; in Billiat they have a rising star on the continent. But still many termed them the underdogs of the group, not that you could blame them because not everyone follows the local PSL. Even though the preparations were shambolic, threats of a boycott aplenty, Katsande's troops quietly believed. Zimbabwe had so many things against them but as long as you have Billiat and company on the pitch, you always have a chance. Ask Pitso Mosimane or any other PSL defender, they will tell you Khama is unplayable when on song. He is not alone, though, for such is the Warriors' embarrassment of riches in attack that the current leading top goalscorer in the PSL can't even get a look in. As the match showed, Zimbabwe's defence is suspect, but as long as they have Billiat and co. they will always have a chance. If there's any truth in the saying "the best way to defend is to attack", then Zimbabwe are surely in there with a shout. Write them off at your own peril." – Pamani B Tshuma #PBT, Joburg
