The exciting news broke recently that Reyaad Pieterse, along with a number of some other former Kaizer Chiefs players, will be plying his trade for his old sheriff Stuart Baxter at SuperSport United. There are mixed views on whether this was a wise move on Pieterse's behalf or not; his reasoning for leaving was apparently to gain more game time at Matsatsantsa, but some supporters doubt that will be as easy for the shot-stopper as he might think.
The tricky part about Pieterse's situation is that he is not going to a club with terrible, inexperienced keepers. As things stand, Ronwen Williams holds the No. 1 spot, and behind him is Boalefa Pule, who made a cameo appearance in the Nedbank Cup final and pulled off some superb saves.
This is what some supporters had to say after Pieterse explained that he was leaving Chiefs to get more game time:
"You think Ronwen will watch you take his position? Forget it, boy, go ask Fernandez. Williams is not taking chances in the goal posts." – Oscar44
"You wanna tell me that the other keeper (Pule), who replaced Williams in the final, is not good enough? In my opinion, there are three of the best keepers at SSU." – Junior_Mafia
"There's Williams at SS United, you'll warm the bench until your butt is wet, papa." – Hekule
While Williams is a respected goalkeeper in South African football circles, Pieterse has one advantage over him that not many South African footballers have – height. Pieterse is a whole 10 centimeters taller.
Who will start is a matter to be decided by coach Baxter, but one thing is for sure, though… SSU are in a good place as both Williams and Pieterse are young (they are both 24), talented, and hungry.
Who will be the benchwarmer at SSU, Pieterse or Williams?
