Today, we bring up a sensitive issue. It is common practice for clubs to retire certain jersey numbers as a sign of respect. For example, at Orlando Pirates, the number 10 has been retired because of the greatness Jomo Sono exemplified. Furthermore, numbers 13 and 22 were also retired in order to honour the late Clifford Moleko and the late Lesley Manyathela, respectively. What can be said of Senzo Meyiwa's then?
Following the untimely murder of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Meyiwa, club chairman Irvin Khoza said he would be retiring the No. 1 jersey in order to honor Senzo.
However, this seems to have been contradicted recently as Brighton Mhlongo has been seen wearing the No. 1 jersey on a number of occasions.
Supporters Club received a concerned message from Shepard Sithole on the matter:
"I am not an Orlando Pirates fan, but I am very disappointed in Dr Irvin Khoza. I still remember, in 2014, when Senzo Meyiwa passed away, Khoza himself came out and announced that the No. 1 jersey used by Meyiwa would be retired, but now I am surprised to see it worn by Brighton Mhlongo. Where is the truth?"
Does Mhlongo wearing the jersey make any sense to you?
