Times are uncertain for our national treasure – Bafana Bafana. After arguably our greatest result (South Africa 2-1 Senegal), came one of our greatest embarrassments (although this is becoming increasingly difficult to rank), our Head Coach Shakes Mashaba was suspended following a television outburst. Now we find out how this affects the supporters, as this is their team.
Shakes Mashaba is by far one of South Africa’s most controversial coaches. Many people have argued over a number of things that have happened under his tenure. Amongst them are, the selection of foreign based players without playing them, his record, and his future.
Read what one of our supporters, Patriot, has to say on all three:
“No player has a birth right to play for the National team; No matter where you ply your trade. The danger of giving preferential treatment to foreign-based players is that you risk alienating the whole group for the sake of players whose availability is not always guaranteed (Overseas clubs often refuse to release players on time). If Lars Veldwijk is called up and is found to be a lesser player in training than the ones we currently have, then it is the coach's discretion to use other players.
“2. Before you use the word Disaster to describe Shakes' tenure you need to have recent historical context when it comes to Bafana Bafana. Go and look up the National Teams records under the following coaches: Mosimane, Igesund, Santana, Pereira, Dumitru, Phumo, Baxter up to Quiroz. You will find it easily on Wikipedia. Tell me who has the best record. Shakes Qualified for Afcon 2004, 2015 and won two COSAFA titles and he is not even paid half of what Parreira was paid per month.
“3. Whether we like a person or not should not be a barometer to determine how good they are. What he say in front of the media is sometimes necessary because the Media buried Shakes long time ago with biased articles which had nothing to do with results. We have 4 Points in our group, we will play Cape Verde (Currently in a mess created by their association) twice and have a chance to lead the group by at least 4 points. We don't need Chaos. Unless we need to Re-live the past 14 years of hurt.” - Patriot
Should Shakes stay or go?
