Soccer-Laduma readers, it’s that time again when we gather round for another great story from the past with Banks, Ace and Peter. This week it’s about Orlando Pirates hard man, Walk Tall Khule. Walk Tall was a great player and a hit with the ladies...but even he experienced embarrassing moments …
Peter: Welcome, welcome … the two grand old men of South African football.
Ace: Hey, careful!
Banks: Ha, ha, alive and kicking.
Peter: Okay, talk to us.
Ace: This week we have a story about the old Orlando Pirates hard man, Walk Tall Khule.
Banks: Ja, Ben …
Peter: Big Ben!
Ace: Let me tell you, people never messed with Walk Tall. He was a good player and he could handle himself on and off the field, that’s why he was called Walk Tall.
Banks: This happened on a Monday. We called Mondays the boys’ holiday because there was never training on Mondays. It was our day off … Monday was party time!
Ace: We were partying in Orlando, near the stadium. It was me, Banksie, Chilliboy Koloba and the Pirates striker Rhee Sikhosana. Everything was fine and happening. Walk Tall was busy with one woman inside the place and every 10 minutes or so he would go outside to meet another girl.
Banksie: Walk Tall was walking fast! Ha, ha …
Ace: At 11 o’clock we decided to leave this party to go to our local place. Everyone knew us at Kopduik. It was our place. You know what I mean. We always ended up there for our final round. Now Kopduik is in Orlando West. To walk there was possible but dangerous because you had to go though an open field. All fields in Soweto are dangerous - that is why we drove there.
Banks: Walk Tall was still too busy with his two women so he told us to go on without him and he would catch up with us later. We thought that he would get a lift with someone later. Soon we were all busy with the ladies. I mean this was our home ground, ha, ha
Ace: About one hour later someone came in and told us that Walk Tall was outside, that he had been beaten up and that he was crying.
Banks: We all ran outside to help him and because Walk Tall was a famous Orlando Pirates player, the whole of Kopduik ran outside as well. Man, when we got outside we were shocked. I didn’t know whether I should laugh or not.
Peter: Why, what did you see?
Ace: Ha, ha, you see Walk Tall was completely naked. He was standing there completely kaalgat with only his hands covering his private parts ha, ha. I know we shouldn’t have laughed but we could see that he wasn’t badly hurt. It was more his pride that was hurt. When Walk Tall saw so many people coming out of Kopduik, he ran away. He thought it would only be Banks and me, not so many women and strangers to see him naked. Ha, ha.
Banks: Ha, ha, when Walk Tall turned around to run away, man, he looked so funny with his naked bum shining in the moonlight, everyone just burst out laughing.
Ace: It was the first time anyone had seen an Orlando Pirates player so up close and personal. Ha, ha.
Banks: Ace and myself ran after him. It was the first and only time I ran after a naked man, ha ha!Eventually we managed to stop him and I gave him my jacket to wear. Then Ace went to fetch the car and we drove to Kaizer’s place to get Walk Tall some of my clothes. Fortunately we were about the same size.
Ace: That’s when he told us what had happened.
Peter: And …
Ace: He told us that he’d decided to walk to Kopduik. He was in Orlando East and to get to Orlando West, where Kopduik was, he had to cross a bridge over a stream and walk across a field. He knew it was dangerous but he thought he would he okay because he was in Pirates territory. There were a lot of trees by the bridge and when he got there, about five guys jumped out and shouted, “Hey, Grootman, take it all out. We don’t want to hurt you but we will if we have to!”
Banks! Ha ha, then they recognized him and one of them started getting excited. “Hey, Walk Tall! It’s Walk Tall,” he kept saying. Walk Tall thought he would be fine then but they just said, “Luister, Walk Tall, sorry, but take off all your clothes and then you can go nicely.” Ha, ha. But then he argued with them and they gave him a few klaps.
Ace: We said to Walk Tall that maybe they were really Kaizer Chiefs supporters … ha, ha!
Banks: Man, Soweto is cruel sometimes. Every open space is dangerous, especially at night.
Ace: Ha, ha, especially for Walk Tall!
Banks: We told him, “Walk Tall, it serves you right for being greedy and having two chicks! You should have stuck to drinking with your buddies.”
Peter: Ha, ha, that’s the naked truth!
Banks: Ja, poor Walk Tall, he never walked too tall after that.
Ace: Ha, ha, and there were no more surprises for the ladies. Walk Tall never came to Kopduik for a very long time. Soweto knew a lot more about Walk Tall after that.
Peter: Nice one. Right, gents, until next week, take it easy.
Banks: Just like Sunday morning.
Ace: You can say that again!
Banks: We will, don’t you worry!
