As is the case with any national team, every man and his dog has an opinion about who should be called up and who should be left behind. One of the bigger problems identified is that only players from “the big three” seem to be looked at for selection. Lets put that to the test.
Concerns were raised by supporters in a morning discussion. Some supporters felt that some players from smaller clubs deserve a look-in.
“Some of Baroka's players deserve call-ups also.” – prakazel
“Actually every persons favourite deserve Bafana look-in..*Ghost Passion*” – ntyso
This lead to one of our supporters pointing out that there may be a bias for only selecting players from Gauteng based clubs:
“Long time now I’ve noticed that once a player is from KZN they wont select him into the national team unless his playing for JHB team.” – Myaka weliPhefeni
Supporters Club has done the math according to the latest team selection for the latest games against Mozambique and Senegal.
Itumeleng Khune (Gaunteg), Ronwen Williams (Gauteng), Brighton Mhlongo (Gauteng).
Ramahlwe Mphahlele (Gauteng), Rivaldo Coetzee (Western Cape), Thulani Hlatshwayo (Gauteng), Clayton Daniels (Gauteng), Asavela Mbekile (Gauteng), Erick Mathoho (Gauteng), Thabo Matlaba (Gauteng).
Dean Furman (Gauteng), Andile Jali (Overseas), May Mahlangu (Overseas), Ayanda Patosi (Overseas), Keagan Dolly (Gauteng), Dane Klate (Gauteng), Mpho Makola (Gauteng), Hlompho Kekana (Gauteng).
Eleazar Rodgers (Gauteng), Bradley Grobler (Gauteng), Lars Veldwijk (Overseas), Sibusiso Vilakazi (Gauteng), Thulani Serero (Overseas), Thuso Phala (Gauteng).
So out of all the locally based players who have been called up, only one hails from a club outside of Gauteng (Rivaldo Coetzee of Ajax Cape Town).
Out of the sixteen PSL teams, only six are in Gauteng. Perhaps there is a bias, or perhaps the best players simply are concentrated in Gauteng.
Are there any players that play in clubs outside of Gauteng that deserve a call up to Bafana Bafana?
