Last weekend saw a morbid event in South African football take place as we watched the dying embers of a once-giant and roaring flame fade quietly into the night. Goodbye to Moroka Swallows. We bid farewell to the giant as it slips into a dark place where none of our eyes or ears can reach… the ABC Motsepe league.
As the team sinks and crumbles, so too do the hearts of its supporters, who have poured their everything into this team since 1947. Supporters Club caught up with one of the club's most recognisable fans, Rasta, who has been "married to the Birds since 1965", and he had a heartfelt message about what it feels like to be a Swallows supporter in this time.
"I don't know what to say. I don’t know what to do. My heart is really broken. I sit here and think, where did it all go wrong? I don’t know. All I can say is that these boys started just playing for money, they didn't play for the supporters or the badge anymore. If we truly go down to ABC Motsepe and don’t buy another team's status like the rumours suggest, then it will take us 50 years to come back. Unless there is a buyer really willing to put a lot in, it will not work. I have been a Swallows supporter for so long now, and this is by far the darkest year I have ever experienced. I never even dreamed that one day we could be playing in the NFD; I never, ever, ever dreamed that we would be playing in the third division..."
What do you think of Swallows' current plight?
