One of South Africa's brightest stars continues to shine proudly overseas. Kamohelo Mokotjo continues his fine form for his Eredivisie club, FC Twente. Due to a public disagreement with coach Shakes Mashaba, "Kamo" has made himself unavailable for national duty – this has made supporters question who should be sacrificed.
Mokotjo recently announced he will retire from international football for as long as Shakes Mashaba is the coach of the national team. This is similar to Kermit Erasmus' situation, another overseas-based star who has stated his unwillingness to play for the national team with the current boss at the helm.
"What's the use of us being told about this (Mokotjo's good form) knowing for a fact that he won't even be featuring within the national team due to our coach, who only sees it right to play abantu that have not tasted football games for five months ahead of those who have not just played but also contributed magnificently towards their teams' ambitions?" – west13
"I just wish they can sack Mashaba and look for a coach who can select Mokotjo... Erasmus and put Dolly there and a pure striker who can partner Erasmus. I tell you, Bafana would be a force to be reckoned with again." – Real Pirates FC
"Cowshaba is allergic to talented players." – nazzzzi
"And Mashaba is still our coach? We may as well swap him with Vera Pauw." – Mxoh-2008
It is a peculiar situation and one that nobody has an answer for. Imagine if Cristiano Ronaldo refused to play for Portugal because of the national coach. It is difficult to imagine that the coach would have a job for much longer. As we head into a crucial stage of our footballing history, when we face the very real and daunting possibility that we may not qualify for another major tournament, we surely need all the help we can get from all our star players.
Let's hope our star players and coaches can resolve their differences.
