Such is the ever-unpredictable nature of African football that one is constantly surprised by new developments. The latest is the news that Sundowns have been reinstated to this season's CAF Champions League, although they will face a mammoth task.
It was recently revealed that DRC side AS Vita had been disqualified from the tounament for fielding an ineligible player. This results in Sundowns being allowed back into the continental competition, but there is a catch – they find themselves in no ordinary group.
They have been placed in Group B, dubbed the group of death, alongside former CCL winners Zamalek (Egypt), Enyimba (Nigeria), and ES Setif (Algeria). One may shudder at the sight of this roster, but it seems most South Africans, regardless of their club colours, are backing the mighty PSL champions to fly the South African flag with pride.
"Masandawana, just go out there and make us proud." – Shackos
"Let them compete with the best." – DaBrisco Nation
"Good luck to Dunu, all the best, they represent South Africa therefore need our support. #Love and Peace." – Jaylee Wayela
"Sundowns must bring the cup home… Please God, help, South African football must rise." – lulikho
If anyone in South Africa can compete with the best on the continent according to current form, it must be Sundowns, a team with great depth and talent.
However, if they are to complete this mammoth task, they will need that X-factor, and they will need the entire Rainbow Nation behind them.
What is your message to Sundowns? Do you think they have what it takes?
