Kaizer Chiefs suffered only their third league defeat to Maritzburg United on Saturday with a costly mistake from stopper Daniel Akpeyi. Fans have shared their views on whether it is time for Itumeleng Khune to make a return.
While Daylon Claasen received the plaudits for his quick-fire brace, Nigerian international Akpeyi will shoulder some of the blame for the Team of Choice’s opener with what seemed to be a lack of judgement.
SL Supporter @hamilton-chauke0, feels that despite his mistake, Akpeyi should not be punished.
“My question is why punish Akpeyi for a mistake? He has been brilliant in those posts for a very long time and one mistake you ask if he should be punished. The current best goalkeeper in world Alisson Becker made many mistakes but has never been punished. He has learned from his mistake and does not need any form of punishment.”
His sentiments are echoed by lindokuhle-elihle-omhle0 who says the 33-year-old’s lapse in judgement does not necessarily mean that he cost the team as Amakhosi were not in the lead to begin with.
“What I consider to be a fault is when a team is leading and a goalie makes a horrendous mistake that costs the team points, Akpeyi is a human being, even the biggest stars inevitably do sometimes have a bad day in the office. If they were leading and Maritzburg equalized that would be unforgivable but come on it’s not the case.”
However, @khsination feels that in the case that Ernst Middendorp does in fact drop Akpeyi for the highly-anticipated Soweto Derby, it should not be viewed as punishment, but rather an opportunity for Khune to step up after his clean sheet in their Nedbank Cup triumph over Royal Eagles.
“If Akpeyi is replaced in the next match that should not be perceived as a punishment but remember, you are as good as your last match performance in football. Therefore, latter must apply, he has to be replaced and that does not constitute a punishment.”
Moreover, Simza@$ feels that Khune will add to Chiefs’ attacking impetus should he start the match against the in-form Buccaneers with his world-class distribution.
“Khune makes us play his distribution is outstanding. Even our players respect him and yes, Daniel performed exceptionally but Khune should be given the nod ahead of Daniel because he adds to our attack.”
Having seen the fans’ opinions, who do you think should do duty for Chiefs when they take on Pirates?
