The PSL has now announced the prize money earnings for the upcoming ABSA Premiership awards, and there were some figures that made a couple supporters raise their eyebrows.
The biggest point of contention has to do with the goalscorers. This season, the top goalscorer in the PSL will receive R25 000, while the NFD's top goalscorer will receive R50 000, and the scorer of the Goal of the Season will receive R50 000. Many supporters think this is unfair.
"No wonder these guys don't score goals. R25 000 is not even a monthly salary for most players." – Leoka la maokeng
"NFD top scorer gets more than PSL? Crazy. And player that scores one goal gets more." – Sinalojj
This is understandable. On the face of it, it does seem outrageous someone in a higher league will get paid less than someone in a lower one. However, there is some logic to this. Our Siya Crew contacted the PSL for clarity and they confirmed that the NFD player will receive more money because the top scorer scored 18 goals, while the top scorer of the PSL scored 14.
Personally, I favour anything that incentivises players to score goals, but I think it's right that you do not get a massive reward for only scoring 14 goals in a season, not matter which league you are in, and there are a few supporters who agree with this sentiment.
"PSL top goalscorer is the lowest, but I'm not surprised. 14 goals is too little." – Neymar Jnr
"Fair prices." – mabasajay
"If you score 25 goals or more in the PSL you get a car, so nothing wrong here. They must work hard." – Solomon Madube 08
What's your take? Do you think this rewards structure is fair?
