Last season, Daniel Cardoso played an integral role in Steve Komphela's Kaizer Chiefs set-up, but this season, the defender's performances so far have been highly criticised by Amakhosi fans. Should he keep his starting position in the line-up, though?
Since his own goal against Baroka FC, many fans have been calling for the centre-back to be benched in order to tighten things up at the back.
The Glamour Boys have conceded seven goals in five league games – Cardoso has turned out in all of them – in this campaign so far, and are yet to secure a win in the Absa Premiership, something the fans are not happy about.
In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Cardoso spoke about the pressure he faces from the fans and losing his father, among other topics, but also said he is willing to play anywhere on the field, much like his time at Free State Stars, where he even featured as a defensive midfielder.
"Put me anywhere on the field and I will always try to do my best to help the team. This game is my bread and butter, this puts a roof over my head and I don't want to let anyone down," he said.
Despite Chiefs' leaky backline, Cardoso's numbers have been somewhat impressive. He's won 71.4% of all his duels so far, a percentage bettered by only six players within the league, but is this enough to keep the 29-year-old in the starting XI?
Maybe he could be used in a different position?
What do our fans have to say about Daniel Cardoso returning to Kaizer Chiefs and starting XI?
"Poor Cardoso, you are one of a kind, brother. I stand by you as you represent change in South African soccer. I know you're paving a way to uniting the nation. It's sad that you are in a country where you are expected to play soccer as a 'kasi-flavoured boy'. It's high time that South Africans begin having an open mind even if we don't understand the game." – Thana10
"He can play as a goalkeeper as well. I think it can work if they can use him as a right-back and use Mphahlele as a center-back." –PROPHET OF DOOM
"Yes, I personally blame him for the errors he made, but I still think he can regain his form if he gets the support he needs." – MALOSE
"Last season, he was great, but this season, Cardoso is off form. He needs to rediscover himself or maybe play in defensive midfield because he struggles under Solinas' tactics. His confidence is gone!" – mzwazwazwa
"We are putting unnecessary pressure on our players. This is so sad." – amdunyelwa718
