More disappointing news circulates our airwaves and ink-filled pages this morning as yet again one of our local teams crashes out of a continental tournament. The most upsetting part about this, is that Mamelodi Sundowns is the best we have at the moment… The cream of the crop… So if they are unable to maintain a two goal lead, what does it say about our crop?
Supporters of all clubs this morning are left covering their face after Mamelodi Sundowns crashed out of the CCC last night following a 2-0 loss to Medeama FC of Ghana. In the process they failed to defend a 3-1 lead earned in an entertaining first leg where Medeama’s coach went AWOL afterwards. It all seemed to go pear shaped for Medeama and the stars seemed aligned for Sundowns, yet, once again we must put the cork back in the Champagne bottle.
“Indeed embarrassing losing to a coachless team.” – SowetoBoy.
“Booted out by a coach-less no name brand team! I give up.” – Qoboza99
“Only Bucs can stand the heat in Africa.” – taxorvat.
“This is really embarrassing… Beaten by a team without a coach and failing to defend a two goal winning margin.” – AS.
The game was not televised last night, so the details of the butchering are not known, yet, no matter the details it is still disappointing. Sundowns had supporters from all teams backing them, abandoning their club colors to support the South African cause.
Pitso Mosimane and the technical staff will soon return and conduct the post mortem, yet the looming question remains: are we just not good enough? Sundowns has by far been the superior team in all local matters this year, and on top of this, it is commonly said that South African teams do not take this tournament seriously, however, we know that Sundowns did but could not deliver the goods.
So now, we are left to comprehend our own talent, we are left to wander what this means for South African football and how Downs could have possibly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory…
Why do we struggle in this tournament? Is this a massive warning sign for South African football?
