Free State Stars are no more. A team forged with many wonderful memories and vibrant supporters will soon cease to exist. We are only now beginning to see the effects of this sale, and among the factors to consider is that the Free State derby will be no more. The neighbours from Bloemfontein discuss what it means to lose their rival.
On the Bloemfontein Celtic supporters official Facebook page, the supporters have been discussing what it means to lose their rival from Bethlehem. One fan took the opportunity to recall a not-so-fond memory of the derby.
"How many of u still remember the last game of the 2007/08 season at the Charles Mopeli Stadium, where they gave us a 5-1 defeat and where we almost went down to the Mvela league had it not been for Arrows against Thanda Royal Zulus that guaranteed our safety in the league?" he wrote.
"From that day, I started hating that team."
Others on the same FB page have expressed their condolences for the loss, and even offered to absorb the nomadic Free State Stars supporters into their own structures.
"Siwe supporters representatives must go to QwaQwa to strengthen our branches and win members to our team. Free State Stars supporters was and were part of our family," one fan said.
"We should stand as one Free State family to fight this. Hela yalo sani."
It seems most of the South African footballing world stands in unison with the fallen team and its heartbroken supporters.
