With the 2016/17 season now on our doorstep, PSL fans are gearing up to cheer for their beloved teams.
It has been a rather interesting off-season, during which some supporters were left with shattered hearts as their clubs changed locations, and players moved around from club to club. Like any other season, some teams will stand head and shoulders above the rest, and there are a few that we can already point out, especially taking into consideration the squads they boast.
Last season, Mamelodi Sundowns dominated our local football and, under the mentorship of coach Pitso Mosimane, there was some beautiful soccer displayed. However, this time around, there is a major task ahead for Masandawana as they have played throughout the off-season, and fatigue could catch up to them, but with "Jingles" at the helm, the Kabo Yellow faithful will hope their tactician can help them reclaim their glory, and add that much-wanted star to their jerseys.
Since joining the SuperSport United team, Stuart Baxter has been on a mission. He has been building his squad, and from the look of things, it looks pretty amazing! Not many have taken note of the work being put in by the Englishman, but one must realise the difference in the playing style of the team that won the Nedbank Cup title at the end of the previous season. With the likes of Jeremy Brockie and Bradley Grobler leading the attack and the inclusion of the experienced Reneilwe Letsholonyane, there promises to be a change in the Matsatsantsa camp's fortunes.
Orlando Pirates have been the busiest of the PSL clubs in the transfer window and have a somewhat new look. With a new coach on the bench and a load of new players, a lot will be expected from the Mayfair-based team. However, some experts might say that Muhsin Ertugral needs some time to put his formidable team together, but, on the other hand, the Buccaneer faithful will be expecting positive results right from the start, and looking at the amount of talent in their squad, there should be a close eye kept on the Pirates ship.
Last season's runners-up Bidvest Wits have become a menace to all opposition and with the mix of an experienced and youthful squad, Gavin Hunt has so far done a superb job. After coming so close to the title in the previous campaign, they will surely come out guns blazing to secure victory.
Let us not rule out Chiefs. They have received a lot flak in recent times for the changes in the squad and questions still linger over the technical team, but it must be kept in mind that there is a good squad at Naturena, and coach Steve Komphela could yet have some tricks up his sleeves.
Which teams do you think will dominate this season? Also, do you think Baroka and Highlands Park will cause upsets in their first seasons in the PSL?
