We find ourselves at a very awkward part of the season, when the second-from-bottom PSL team engages in warfare with the second and third top team of the NFD in what is known as the dreaded promotion/relegation play-offs. It seems, from talking to many supporters and applying a pinch of logic, these play-offs are a complete waste of time, and don't benefit the most deserving team…
Many supporters are calling for two things: firstly, for the league to be grown to include 20 teams for a larger pool of talent, and, secondly, for the bottom teams to be relegated and the top teams in the NFD to be promoted.
"2 in and 2 out, that's it. There's a lot of talent in Mvela league. The sooner we realise that, the better. Rather than watching old players going from one team to another, let's promote the talent in the NFD." – Tboz_downs
While many think it would be beneficial to have fresh blood in the PSL, others think the whole set-up of the play-offs is just plain unfair.
"The promotion play-offs are nothing but a waste of time and an excuse to try to protect the PSL team that finished second from last. If fairness was a part of the game, the bottom teams would be automatically relegated. How does one justify the situation where a team that finishes third in NFD plays in promotion play-offs and qualifies for promotion at the expense of a team that were runners-up on goal difference." – kutsimlupe
It doesn't appear to be the fairest system. Not only can a team that comes third get promoted over a team that comes second, but a team can remain in the PSL despite losing most of its games, while a team that wins most of its games in the NFD can be punished and remain down for another season if they have one or two bad games…
Do you agree with the play-off system? What should be in its place?
