We can hear the cries of the loyal supporters of Moroka Swallows as the team continues on a downward spiral. It is a rather devastating sight to see. Will we ever get to witness a former giant of the local game dominating the top flight again?
The original Soweto Derby contestants were once a force to be reckoned with as they boasted a formidable squad and gave their opponents a tough time. Just ask the likes of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. The team has a great history and have, over the years, collected both league and cup titles, with the last being the MTN8 cup in 2012.
Two seasons after their MTN8 glory, the unexpected took place and the team were relegated to the National First Division. Most in the football fraternity were saddened by this, and the fans of Swallows became disheartened. Unfortunately, there were more disappointments heading their way…
At the end of the 2015/16 season, a year into their NFD participation and with hopes of moving back into the PSL, the team found themselves rock-bottom on the log, and therefore plunged into the third tier, a place no soccer fan thought they would find the Birds. As they fight to redeem themselves, all does not look good for them as they are currently last on the log. Hopefully the team will turn the corner and, one day, we can see the club's maroon colours back in the top flight again.
What do you miss most about having Swallows in the PSL?
