On Wednesday night, we saw a Kwa-Zulu Natal derby between Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows end 1-1. Among the negatives for the Team of Choice was: another winless game, a red card for star player Deolin Mekoa, and, the biggest one of all, an alleged kick from Mandla Ncikazi to Ernst Middendorp's face. And if that wasn’t enough, the supporters have moved in to bayonet the wounded…
This is a serious incident, and it requires a thorough investigation. Furthermore, whoever is found to be in the wrong needs to be sent a strong message.
However, humour is also part of our mechanism for dealing with issues in football, so we thought we would share some of the light- hearted comments regarding the incident. Here are a few supporters' messages for Coach Middendorp:
"Eish, where was Mr. Ref? Because he was supposed to give them gloves." – Lusindisozathu
"Ayeye, he is going to kick Komphela and Bobby one of these days." – Kaizerchiefsaddict
"Why you didn't kick him back?" – Salocin Iminald
"Shut up, you destroyed Scarra Ngobese." – Wolfoflangster
"A case must be opened at the nearest police station." – Tigisela M
Regardless of these humorous comments, we must point out that if what is alleged turns out to be true, then the wrongdoers need to be held to account. Incidents like this bring into question the integrity and professionalism of our football.
A member of the coaching staff is meant set an example for the players and should not stoop to being physical when provoked… That is schoolyard behaviour, not sideline etiquette.
Supporters are also starting to question how normal or proper it is to have a club chairman as the CEO of the PSL, as is the case with Golden Arrows and Mato Madlala.
One has to ask what officials, referees, security, etc. (all things tied to PSL structures and authority), did to prevent or stop the incident?
What do you make of last night's incident? In your opinion, is it improper to have a club chairman as PSL CEO, or does it not make a difference?
